The food allergy is the reaction of the body’s immune system
to some of the food substance or certain ingredient of the
specific food-normally the protein. Food allergic reaction
may be serious and requires to be attended by the qualified
physician only. The food allergy is also called ‘food
hypersensitivity’ and its symptoms may be uncommon.
There are some peculiar types of food items that are found
to cause alergic reactions most often. They include: milk,
eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish.
Many other food substances have been identified as allergens
to some people, like certain fruits or vegetable and seeds.
Many children having food allergies to milk, eggs, soy and
wheat will leave behind their allergy as they grow older,
but the allergy to peanuts, tree nuts and fish generally
continues. The shellfish allergy often occurs during later
childhood or adulthood and is believed to be the common most
allergies in the adults. The peanuts and tree nuts are
considered causing the most serious types of allergic
reactions amongst all food allergies.
Symptoms of food allergies: The symptoms of food allergies
mostly vary from person to person and may even differ in the
same individual during different exposures. Allergic
reactions to food may vary in severity, time of inception
and may be affected by when the food was eaten. Exercise
could also be the factor.
Some of the food allergies may
affect only the gastrointestinal tract – stomach and
intestines, though these are mostly the childhood conditions
but some may continue. Common symptoms of food allergy
include: skin irritations like rashes, hives and eczema,
nausea, diarrhoea and vomiting. Sneezing, runny nose and
shortness of breathing can also result from food allergy.
Treatment: The best way is to detect and avert the probable
cause of the food allergy. However, some specific
medications like antihistamines may prove to be effective.
