Allergic Hives could also be termed as alergic urticaria.
The hives are raised, mostly itchy, red welts on the surface
of the body skin. Usually the allergic hives or alergic
urticaria is considered as the reaction to some food or
medicine substances.
Causes: The histamine and other chemicals are discharged
into the blood stream of the person having allergic
reactions to any substance, causing itching, swelling and
several other
symtoms. Hives are considered to be the most
common reactions especially in people having other allergies
like hay fever. When swelling or welts develop around the
face specifically the lips and the eyes, is known as angioedema. Swelling due to angioedema may also appear
around hands, feet and throat.
There are several substances that can cause hives, such as:
medicines, shellfish, fish, nuts, eggs, milk or other dairy
foods, pollen, animal dander like cat dander and insect
bites. Besides these, the hives may also cause due to
infections like mononucleosis or illness, emotional stress,
excessive exposure to cold or sun and excessive
perspirations.
Symptoms: Itching, swelling of the skin surface into red or
skin colored welts also called wheals which distinctly
defined edges. The welts may increase, spread and join
together forming larger areas of flat, raised skin surface.
They may also change their shapes, vanish or just reappear
within minutes or even hours. Welts are known to initiate or
vanish rapidly. The centre of the welts when pressed at the
center turns white.
Treatment: In case of milder hives, no treatment is required
as they may vanish themselves, but to diminish itching and
swelling, remember to avoid hot baths or showers, irritating
the area with tight-fitting clothing, applying calamine
lotion and ingest antihistamine medications.
