Milk allergy could be defined as the immunologically
activated adverse reaction to the milk or milk product.
There are people who experience allergic reactions when they
ingest milk or any of the milk products or dairy products as
it can trigger their bodies into launching the inappropriate
immune response to the proteins in milk resulting in the
alergic reactions.
Symptoms: The symptoms of milk allergy have been categorized
in three different types according to their reactions:
Dermatological or Skin reactions: Itchy red rashes, hives,
eczema, swelling of lips – mouth – tongue – face or throat,
and allergic shiner or black circles. Gastrointestinal or
Stomach and intestinal reactions: abdominal pain and
bloating, diarrhoea that are generally very runny, vomiting,
gas or wind formation and cramps. Respiratory or Nose,
Throat and Lung Reactions: runny nose, sneezing, watery and
/ or itchy eyes, coughing, wheezing and shortness of breath.
The clinical range of symptoms extends to various disorders
like: anaphylactic reactions, Atopic dermatitis, wheeze,
infantile colic, Gastro esophageal reflux – GER,
oesophagitis, alergic colitis and constipation. The symptoms
may develop within just a few minutes of exposure in the
immediate reactions of after several hours or after several
days in some uncommon cases, in delayed reactions.
Causes: The causes of the milk allergy are similar to all
the other allergies. The immune system recognizes foreign
antibodies and releases immunoglobulin to fight-out the
invaders. Their encounter causes allergic reactions in the
body.
Treatment: The complete avoidance of milk proteins is the
best treatment for the alergic milk reactions. Oral
medications may help recovering from the allergic conditions
in due course of time.
