The uncommon reactions of the immune system that develop in
response to the otherwise harmless substances or allergens
are known as allergic reactions. Detecting and averting such
probable allergen is the first line of defence against
possible alergic reactions on the body. Though total or
thorough control on the environment is generally difficult
to comply, therapeutic involvements are normally adopted.
Various medications are available in both prescription and
over-the-counter drugs for the treatment of immediate
hypersensitivity of allergic reactions. Most of such drugs
usually work by reducing the ability of histamine for
aggravating symptoms. Other drugs work against the effects
of histamine by stimulating other systems or diminishing the
overall immune responses.
There are different types of treatments for the alergic
reactions. The most suitable of them is mutually decided by
the patient and the doctor based on the individual symptoms
and medical conditions. However, drugs therapy and
immunotherapy are the most widely used treatments for the
general type of allergic reactions.
Drug therapy: This therapy comprises of Anti-histamines,
Decongestants, Corticosteroids and Mast cell stabilizers.
Antihistamines are the drugs for treating the symptoms of
alergic rhinitis by blocking the chemical – histamine,
discharged by the immune system during the allergic
reactions.
Decongestants: Used for drying up the nasal passage tissues
and minimize swollen nasal membranes to relieve congestions.
They are available in spray, drops, pills or syrup form.
Corticosteroids: These drugs diminish mucus membrane
inflammation. They are also available in nasal spray form.
Mast cell stabilizers: Cromolyn sodium prevents the
discharge of mast cell granules and in turn histamine
discharge besides, other chemicals contained therein.
Immunotherapy is also known as allergy shots which alters
the balance of antibody types in the body.
Many more therapies could be used depending on the typical
alergic reaction conditions.
